Reading

Read Everyday

Ensure that you are reading with your child everyday. Children are learning all the time. Read everything with them, street signs, food labels, magazines, story books, non fiction books. There are opportunities to read everywhere. When you read with them or to them, they are picking up sounds, high frequency words and expression.  Please ensure you encourage a love of reading.

Ask Questions

When you are reading with your child, make sure you ask them questions to check their understanding. Who is their favourite character? What do they think will happen next? What has happened so far?

Read a Range of Books

Don't be afraid of chapter books, even in year one, you can choose a chapter book and read it aloud to your child each day. Encourage them to read simple words and sentences, some books without pictures are the most exciting!

Phonics

Phonics are a key tool in helping children to decode and recognise words. Get the children to sound out and then blend the words together. Not sure of the Phonics sounds as parents? That's ok, use the video link included to help. I will also include the different phonics sound mats for phases 2-5 below. Get the children to teach you the phonics sounds. If you need further support with this contact me on plumclass@hadlow.kent.sch.uk I will be happy to help.
