Home Learning

At Hadlow Primary School, we make our home learning relevant, purposeful, but most of all fun!

Children in Reception-Year 6 have home learning journals in which to record their home learning. Home learning tasks for the whole term are given out at the beginning of a term and children can choose which they want to complete each week. These are a combination of English and Maths activities, talk time and creative tasks. This gives parents a good idea of what tasks are coming up, so that resources and support can be provided. It also gives the children a chance to speak to their Teachers and Teaching Assistants if they are stuck for ideas or struggling with a particular piece.

We always encourage Parents to support their child with the initial ideas, planning and research but that the child independently completes the finished product. We want to see what they can do!

Children should be spending no more than 30 minutes an evening on their home learning and no more than 1 hour in total. We ask that home learning is returned to school on Wednesday. It will then be marked and given out again on a Friday. If a child does not complete their home learning, they may be asked to catch up with this during the school day.

Each night children are expected to read their reading book. Our reading scheme is a combination of Oxford Reading Tree and 'real' texts. The pages that have been read should be recorded in the reading journal. The reading journal needs to be brought into school every day for the teacher and teaching assistant to monitor reading and the texts that are being read. When reading is missed, children will be asked to read with an adult at some point during the school day.

Children in year 1-6 will also be given spellings each week. These will need to be practiced and learnt for a spelling test the following week.

If there is ever a reason why your child has not been able to complete their home learning or reading, please inform the class teacher or teaching assistant as soon as you can and we will do our best to support your child with what they have missed in school.

With parents as partners and on going support at home, our children are guaranteed to reach or even exceed their potential!
