Common Exception Words (CEWs)
These are the words in the National Curriculum word lists for Years 1 and 2.
They are called “exception” words because they don’t always follow the usual phonics rules children are taught (e.g. said, was, are, they).
Pupils are expected to learn to read and spell them, even though they can’t always be sounded out in the normal way.
They are sometimes also called “tricky words.”
